Netherlands-China Dialogue on Industrial Electrification

Industrial electrification with renewable electricity can decarbonize a large share of the industry’s energy consumption. China and the Netherlands see the potential of electrification and want to be at the forefront of this field. Both countries have large (chemical) parks with heavy industry in which projects are underway that deal with electrification. In this dialogue, we will discuss the developments and opportunities for cooperation.

Brightlands Chemelot Campus and the Chemelot Industrial Park are located in Limburg in the Netherlands. Both house companies specialized in the field of materials and chemistry. Chemelot is designed upon one central idea: to bring together the knowledge and skills normally found only in major organizations, and to apply these within a flexible community of small and large chemical businesses, radically changing the view of the chemical industry. Brightlands is the first circular hub of Europe. Brightlands focuses on business, research, and education and is home to 100+ companies, ranging from big companies to small start-ups.

RMI is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit organization of experts across disciplines working to accelerate the clean energy transition and improve lives. RMI decarbonizes energy systems through a rapid, market-based change in the world’s most critical geographies to align with a 1.5°C future and address the climate crisis. RMI works with businesses, policymakers, communities, and other organizations to identify and scale energy system interventions that will cut greenhouse gas emissions at least 50% by 2030. For nearly 40 years, RMI has utilized unique techno-economic expertise and whole-systems thinking to both publish groundbreaking research and analysis.

VoltaChem pushes technological developments from TRL 3-5 (research & innovation) towards TRL 5-7 (piloting and demonstration) in a collaborative program. VoltaChem does this by advancing knowledge through collaboration with top players in the field and by further developing this knowledge into pilots and demonstrators together with industry and regional clusters. VoltaChem adopts a multidisciplinary approach that brings together the entire value chain: R&D (institutions, universities), users (chemical, electricity) and suppliers (sub-components, equipment, and engineering). VoltaChem has 4 program lines: Power-2-Integrate, Power-2-Heat, Power-2-Chemicals and Power-2-Hydrogen.
