The Times Higher Education (THE) BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2014 was released last week to rank universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as well as 17 other “emerging economies”.
Peking University tops the table, with Tsinghua University second. Four of the top 10 and 23 of the top 100 institutions are Chinese. The other two in the top 10 are the University of Science and Technology (USTC) of CAS and Fudan University in Shanghai.
The next best represented regions are Taiwan (21), India (10), Turkey (7), then South Africa and Thailand (five each).
The new THE Ranking used Thomson Reuters data and the same methodology as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. It covered the standards of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook by using 13 performance indicators. It only considered institutions in countries classified as “emerging economies” by FTSE, including the “BRICS” nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa
