Innovation in the Chinese Automotive Sector

China’s car industry is moving upmarket towards the middle segment, an analysis using financial statements of the biggest Chinese manufacturers reveals. Revenue growths are high, and the market fragmented. Patents reveal that innovation occurs more in private companies, which serve a much smaller but growing, share of the market. Even so, state-owned enterprises, often backed by joint ventures with foreign car manufacturers, are also innovating, and privately owned companies will not take over the market just yet. More fundamental research takes place across universities in China, where those in first-tier cities Beijing and Shanghai produce most international research with the highest impact. Most opportunities for Dutch companies lie in the area of Electric Vehicles and Automated Driving. This is also the area where most international research is taking place
